WELCOME TO HUMAN AI PROJECT
Human-Centered AI: Towards Accessible and Personalized Language Models (HumanAI)
HumanAI is a research project funded under the “Plan Estatal de Investigación Científico, Técnica y de Innovación” by the “Agencia Estatal de Investigación”.
It started in September 2024 and will finish in August 2027. Its main goal is to develop Generative AI tools in Spanish specifically tailored for people with intellectual disabilities. The project aims to foster inclusion and accessibility, reduce the digital divide, and improve the quality of life of these individuals, with a strong emphasis on ethics and environmental responsibility. Through a user-centered design (UCD) approach, end users will actively participate in all stages of the project—from the customization of language models to the design of cognitively accessible interfaces—implementing a “human in the loop” methodology.
This is a coordinated project between the HULAT research group at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and the NIL research group at Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
Research issues
Human-Centered AI (HCAI)
HumanAI prioritizes the active involvement of individuals with intellectual disabilities throughout the entire design and development process, aiming to create usable and accessible AI solutions that truly serve the needs of end users.
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
HumanIA advances inclusive Natural Language Processing (NLP) by developing and adapting LLMs in Spanish tailored to the needs of people with intellectual impairments, exploring human-in-the-loop fine-tuning techniques, corpora aligned with plain language and easy-to-read principles, and alternative communication methods such as pictograms.
Cognitive Accessibility
HumanAI designs user interfaces and language models that accommodate diverse cognitive needs, creating adaptive systems that will lower cognitive barriers and empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to interact with Generative AI more independently.
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
HumanIA applies HCI principles and methodologies to design and evaluate Generative AI tools in Spanish that are both accessible and user-friendly for people with intellectual disabilities. The project involves end users, caregivers, and experts throughout the design cycle, focusing on usability, personalization, and cognitive accessibility.
