The four principal investigators of the HumanAI project took part in the 3rd Convention of the Pan-Hispanic Network for Clear and Accessible Language (Red Panhispánica de Lenguaje Claro y Accesible), held on 1–2 October in La Plata, Argentina.

The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) and the Supreme Court of Justice of the Province of Buenos Aires jointly convened the event, and the Argentine Academy of Letters hosted it. Its theme was “Ibero-American Dialogue on Clear and Accessible Language and Artificial Intelligence.” The convention brought together more than 1,200 attendees and over 275 presentations across six thematic areas. Two of these areas are central to HumanAI: artificial intelligence and language technology, and cognitive accessibility and easy-to-read.

The HumanAI team gave four presentations, all on the first day of the convention. In the artificial intelligence and language technology area:

  • Paloma Martínez presented “IA responsable y centrada en las personas” in the session “IA responsable y accesible: tecnología al servicio de las personas.”
  • Virginia Francisco presented “Inteligencia artificial generativa y lectura fácil hacia una adaptación asistida con fidelidad, personalización y supervisión humana” in the session “Lingüística e inteligencia artificial: asistentes para una comunicación clara.”

In the cognitive accessibility and easy-to-read area:

  • Virginia Francisco chaired the session “Diseñar para comprender: interacción, autonomía y participación”, where Raquel Hervás presented “Más allá del texto adaptado: interacción y control del usuario para una IA accesible”.
  • Paloma Martínez chaired the session ““Tecnología para comprender: herramientas digitales y accesibilidad cognitiva”, where Lourdese Moreno presented “PlainHealth: comunicación médico-paciente cognitivamente clara y accesible”.

The papers will be published in the Convention Proceedings

The convention closed with the signing of the “La Declaración de la Plata”. The declaration creates the Ibero-American Network for Clear and Accessible Language, a new space for cooperation among Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking institutions committed to the right to understand.

The convention gave HumanAI a chance to share its work on making generative artificial intelligence easier to understand and more accessible for everyone, especially people with intellectual disabilities. The team also connected with other groups and institutions working on clear language and easy-to-read.
