Professors Raquel Hervás Ballesteros and Virginia Francisco Gilmartín, principal investigators of the HumanAI project at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), were recently featured in a report published by Tribuna UCM. In the interview, they present the project’s main goals, which focus on making generative AI in Spanish more accessible for people with intellectual disabilities through user-friendly and customizable interfaces.
The researchers highlight that many people with intellectual disabilities are either unfamiliar with generative AI or find it difficult to use. HumanAI therefore aims to go beyond plain text, offering systems that allow users to adapt language levels, incorporate pictograms, and configure interaction according to their individual needs. The project also emphasizes the active participation of people with intellectual disabilities in the design and validation of these tools, ensuring that the solutions address real user experiences.
At UCM, the team is particularly focused on developing accessible interfaces, while other project partners contribute expertise in language processing, corpus development, and model adaptation for Spanish. Pilot activities are also planned with the ACCEDE program at UCM, where young people with intellectual disabilities will test different generative AI systems and provide feedback to refine the solutions.
