Talks in 2025 on Cognitive Accessibility, Plain Language, and Easy-to-Read
In 2025, our researcher Lourdes Moreno (UC3M), co-PI of the HumanAI project, delivered several invited talks focused on cognitive accessibility, from designing understandable user interfaces to adapting content into Plain Language and Easy-to-Read versions, using generative AI with a human-in-the-loop approach (participation of people with cognitive impairments) in design and validation.
- In June, at the Madrid Book Fair (Ibero-American Pavilion), Lourdes Moreno took part in the session “Easy-to-Read and Cognitive Accessibility. The event included a pre-presentation on “Easy-to-Read and a Comprehensible Web. A White Paper in the Context of the New Regulation” (written by María Xesús Bello and Oscar García Muñoz, publicación from Nebrija Observatory of Spanish (ONE), with the collaboration of Fundación “la Caixa” and Fundación ONCE) and reflections on common web barriers (hard-to-use interfaces, information overload, unexpected changes, complex forms, and difficult-to-understand texts), as well as design guidelines to reduce them. - In October, she was an invited speaker at the workshop “I Trust You, Machine” (Fundación Ramón Areces, Madrid), held within the CONfIA project. In the session on trust evaluation, she gave the talk : “How do cognitive accessibility and certain design principles help build trust in AI?” The presentation highlighted that understanding (both the interface and the content) is a key factor for genuine trust, not just “perceived” trust.
- Also in October, Lourdes participated as an invited speaker at the 3rd International Clear Communication Conference (COMCLARA), in the roundtable “Plain Language, Disability and Accessibility”, with the talk: “Designing screens and texts that adapt to be understood: cognitive accessibility and inclusive AI.” She presented strategies to design interfaces and texts that reduce cognitive load, support navigation, and enable adapting the level of simplification to different needs. - Finally, in November, as part of the Madrid Science and Innovation Week, Lourdes Moreno, alongside María Xesus Bello from the Observatorio del Español at the Nebrija Foundation, and expert Óscar Muñoz delivered the lecture “Opening knowledge to every mind: Easy-to-Read and Plain Language for a comprehensible web”, organised by the Nebrija Observatory of Spanish and the Faculty of Languages and Education / Antonio de Nebrija University. The session focused on how Easy-to-Read, Plain Language, and cognitive accessibility contribute to more inclusive and responsible digital communication.
These contributions, within the HumanAI project at HULAT-UC3M, align with HumanAI’s vision of developing more understandable, adaptive, and accessible AI, co-designed and validated with people with cognitive accessibility needs and their representative groups.
